Time for something different

Time for something serious today, underlying racism in sports.

As I assume most of you have probably read already, Jacques Rogge head boss of the Olympics complained about Usain Bolt having a lack of respect for his rivals:

"However, he still has to mature. He is a young man but he should show more respect for his rivals. That would be more in the spirit of the Olympic ideal.
"He should shake hands with them after the finish line. However, he is only 21 and he will learn. I have no problems with his showboating (prior to the race) but a shake of the hand or a tap on the shoulder immediately after the race would be a good gesture.
"It would be good not to have a repeat of the 'catch me if you can' gesture," added Rogge,
He also tried to give him a compliment at the same time to try and take away some of the negativity from his comments. By itself, these comments would not irritate me in the least. However because it is the Olympics and comparisons between Phelps and Bolt have been all the rage lately, Rogge seemed like a hypocrite to me.

You see Rogge has previously called the American swimmer a legend, an icon, he went out of his way to praise the Olympian. And by all means, Phelps has earned these praises he is in a league of his own. But that is not the issue. Rogge never commented that Phelps had disrespected his rivals by celebrating his wins, especially his 8th medal, where he paraded around with his teammates rather arrogantly.

What am I getting at? Was Bolt criticised and Phelps praise because of their skin colours? Perhaps.

The subject of biased treatment in the media has been explored before, Charles Barkley touched on it in his book “I may be wrong but I doubt it” saying that whenever he spoke about how he thought the 76ers needed to get better and how they had to improve, the media would label him as being angry or mad at his teammates. But when Lenny Dykstra or Darren Daulton, who played for the Phillies and happened to be white, said the same things the media would glorify them and take their side.

Is it possible that the media is subconsciously, or even worst, consciously racist? I don’t have an answer but the evidence is condemning.

The 1st annual positional rankings

I have decided to start a new trend here at Ian’s Ramblings, which gets updated so infrequently and probably has a readership of 1, or 0. But starting tonight I vow to update semi regularly which in turn, will hopefully bolster my followers as well. As I was saying before I started to digress, I am starting a new yearly ranked list that will rank each position’s top 10 players. I will do this list every year during the summer time before the beginning of the next season. I started doing one last year, with the intention of having a top 30 list, but kind of crapped out after my top 13 and never got back to finishing it. But this year, I am harder, better, faster, stronger and ready to get it done (Daft Punk and Kanye, don’t worry your checks are in the mail). Let’s start with the point guards, some of my favorite players are 1’s and the duty that they have on an NBA team is of the utmost importance, unless you’re the Clippers in which case it doesn’t really matter what you do, as you ar...

New Years Resolutions!

As the year is drawing to a close and with a new one just entering the door, what better time to go over all 30 NBA teams' New Years' Resolutions! Atlanta Hawks: To search the Italian League through and through in order to find someone named Luigi. After having found said player, the Hawks will sign him to a contract. Simply for the hilraity provided with having both Mario and Luigi riding the bench for the team. Boston Celtics: To have a special agent break both of Kobe's legs and assasinate Pau Gasol. Once that task is done all the Celtics have to do is hope the Warriors don't somehow squeeze into the playoffs and then the NBA finals. Charlotte Bobcats: Have Boris Diaw and Michael Jordan undergo a surgery that would take Jordan's heart, talent and killer instinct and implant in Diaw's body. If this operation is a success, the 'Cats would have a 25% chance to go 35-47. In the East, that's good enough for the 3rd seed... right? Chicago Bulls: Make sure t...

Top 10 shooting guards in the NBA

So here is, as promised, part 2 of my top 10-by position- lists. Look at me, actually delivering what I say I will. I feel all high and mighty. Top 10 Shooting Guards 1. Kobe Bryant There is no argument against this and I will not hear anything anyone tells me. The best player on the planet should understandably be the best player at his position. 2. Dwyane Wade He is like Kobe lite. He plays in a similar way that KB plays, especially in his younger days, and he has a habit of putting points in your face. A lot of people have compared Flash to Michael Jordan but I think he is more athletic and more talented Scottie Pippen. As in, the guy has proven he can win without being the big banana. They have also shown some skills in being the starring role as well, Pippen when MJ first “retired” (actually leading the Bulls to a 2 point increase) and Wade when Shaq was kicked exiled to the Suns last season. (Even though it was understated that by then Wade had been the leader for a while, Shaq w...
